Translation commentary on Jeremiah 49:18

For Sodom and Gomorrah, see 23.14. The reference is to the events of Gen 19.24-25.

Were overthrown; that is, “were destroyed.” To avoid the passive construction, some translators will render the first half of this verse as “Just the way that I destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities nearby, I will do it to Edom.”

Says the LORD: See 1.8.

No man shall dwell there, no man shall sojourn in her: In both occurrences no man is used inclusively, with the sense that “No one will ever live there again” (Good News Translation). The last part of the verse is an example of parallelism where the second part adds to the first. Translators may say, for example, “no one shall live there; no one will ever settle there.”
