SIL Translator’s Notes on Romans 16:15

16:15a

Philologus: This is a man’s name.

Julia: This is a woman’s name.

Nereus and his sister: Here the word sister refers to Nereus’ actual sister.

16:15b

Olympas: This is a man’s name.

all the saints with them: This indicates that the people named in 16:15a and these saints are all part of one group of believers. They probably met in someone’s house to worship. These words probably do not indicate that they all lived in one house.

saints: The Greek word that the Berean Standard Bible translates as saints is literally “holy (ones).” It can mean “holy people,” “people dedicated/consecrated to God,” or “people whom God has made holy.” Here it probably implies all of these meanings. In the New Testament, this word refers to all Christians, not to any special group of Christians. See how you translated this word in 1:7 or 16:2.

Paul did not imply here that this group was more holy than the group of believers he mentions in 16:14b. Your translation should not indicate or imply that this group was more holy than the group of believers in 16:14b.
