Translation commentary on Letter of Jeremiah 1:65

Since this verse begins a new section, the connector For may be omitted.

They can neither curse nor bless kings: Good News Translation adds “These gods have no power over kings,” which is evidently intended to explain what is meant by pronouncing curses or granting blessings. It does not correspond to any Greek wording. A more economical approach for the whole verse might be to say the following:

• These gods [or, idols] cannot punish kings or make them successful.
