Now the king’s servants who threw them in …: It is helpful to indicate who the pronoun them refers to. Good News Translation says “the three men,” and Contemporary English Version uses the names “Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.”

Did not cease feeding the furnace fires is translated by Good News Translation as “kept the fire hot by feeding it” and by Contemporary English Version as “kept tossing in [to the fire].”

Naphtha today is a distilled petroleum product used as a solvent. Here it refers to crude petroleum (see 2 Macc 1.36). Good News Translation and Contemporary English Version have “oil” while New Jerusalem Bible has “crude oil.” Pitch is a dark, thick and sticky substance related to petroleum; it burns (see Gen 6.14; Exo 2.3; Isa 34.9). Good News Translation and Contemporary English Version “tar” is a reasonable equivalent, although technically it is a modern product. Tow consists of fibers from the flax plant, ready to be spun into linen thread. Good News Translation translates “flax” (Contemporary English Version “dried flax plants”). It burns very quickly (see Jdg 16.9; Isa 1.31; Sir 21.9). Tow is not familiar to people in many cultures. In such cases we may use a modern equivalent such as “kindling,” which is any sort of fiber or material that catches on fire quickly and burns with a hot flame. Brush refers to twigs and branches from trees and bushes. Good News Translation, New Revised Standard Version, and New Jerusalem Bible render it as “brushwood” (see Jdg 9.48-49; Isa 64.2). All four of these substances produce a quick and intensely hot flame.
