Translation commentary on Sirach 45:19

The Lord saw it and was not pleased is literally “The Lord saw and was not pleased.” In English an object is almost required after “saw.” Revised Standard Version supplies it but Good News Translation “what they were doing” is more natural. Not pleased is translated “became angry” by Good News Translation.

And in the wrath of his anger they were destroyed; he wrought wonders against them to consume them in flaming fire: See Num 16.35. Good News Translation restructures this verse, but every element in these lines is present. An alternative model is “His anger became so hot that he performed a miracle by sending down fire and destroying them.”
