Good News Translation‘s paragraph break here is appropriate.

Woe to you, ungodly men: People who have no use for religion are addressed here. This is only a literary device, however, and some translators may want to phrase this in the third person. Woe to you is not exactly a curse, but it is not far from it. It is not so much wishing Woe or misfortune on someone as predicting it. Good News Translation “You are doomed” is a good statement. Other possibilities are “You have a terrible destiny,” “You face a dreadful future,” and even “God Most High will punish you.”

Who have forsaken the law of the Most High God!: The law refers to the Law given to Moses by God. Ben Sira probably has in mind here particular groups of Jews who adopted parts of Greek culture. This is one of the few passages where the Greek translator has used the word God. Translators who express ungodly in the first line as “people who do not worship God” may put the phrase the Most High God at the beginning of the verse by saying:

• The Most High God [or, God who is above everything] will punish you people who reject him, you people who refuse to obey his Law.
