Translation commentary on Sirach 37:23

A wise man will instruct his own people, and the fruits of his understanding will be trustworthy: Good News Translation offers a good translation here; it matches its translation of verse 22 well enough to reflect the similarity of the last lines of these verses in Greek. However, if a translator adopts the model for verse 22 given above, another approach is called for in order to reflect the similarity of verses 22b and 23b. We could say:

• When a wise person serves his people as a teacher, he can speak, and people will rely on his good sense.
