Verse 14, the only place in which the psalmist refers to his enemies’ actions, is practically identical with 54.3. Line c they do not set thee before them means “they have no regard for you”; New English Bible “give no thought to thee,” New Jerusalem Bible “they are not mindful of You.”

In the midst of his difficulties the psalmist knows that God is with him (verse 15); he is merciful and gracious (the latter word is related to the verb “to be kind”; see 4.1). God is slow to anger (Good News Translation “always patient,” New English Bible “forbearing”), that is, not quickly aroused to punish sinners. The expression slow to anger is sometimes rendered “you, God, do not get a hot heart quickly.” He is full of steadfast love and faithfulness (see comments on 5.7 and on “truth” in 15.2).
