The psalm closes with a final lesson (verse 10), followed by an exhortation for all the LORD’s faithful people to rejoice (verse 11).

The Many … pangs of the wicked (verse 10a) are the sufferings that come upon those who refuse to obey God. They are contrasted with the righteous (verse 11a), the upright in heart (verse 11b), who are called upon to Be glad, rejoice, and shout for joy.

Steadfast love surrounds must be recast in a number of languages as a clause; for example, “God faithfully loves and protects those who trust him.”

The phrase in the LORD in verse 11a means “because of what the LORD has done.”

The address form O righteous may sometimes be rendered “you that are good,” or idiomatically, “you that walk straight.”

Shout for joy must sometimes be recast to say, for example, “shout and be happy” or “because you are joyful, shout in praise of the LORD.”

The phrase upright in heart occurs only in Psalms (see 7.10 and comments), and also in 2 Chronicles 29.32.
