They neither marry nor are given in marriage: the impersonal use of they is a way of speaking of people in general, while marry and are given in marriage reflect the Jewish marriage custom of the time, according to which men “married” and women were “given in marriage.” Barclay has “men and women neither marry nor are married,” but New English Bible is better: “men and women do not marry.” Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch translates the entire verse as follows: “When the dead rise, they will no longer marry, but they will live as the angels in heaven.” But if Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch is followed as a translation model at this point, then care must be taken to ensure that “live as the angels” is not misunderstood. In context the reference is to the fact that angels do not marry. Good News Translation achieves a fuller measure of clarity through reversing the order of the clauses: “they will be like angels in heaven and will not marry.”

In place of angels some manuscripts have “angels of God” (see Revised Standard Version footnote). TC-GNT favors the shorter reading on the grounds that “of God” is a “natural expansion, which, if present in the text originally, would not have been likely to be omitted.” But see 1.20 for a discussion of angels. Some translators will have been using an expression for this word that contains the idea “of God” in any case. If they have not, then it should not be added here.
