Translation commentary on Leviticus 9:17

Cereal offering: Good News Translation “grain offering.” See chapter 2.

Of the morning: this refers to the burnt offerings which were to be made every morning and are described in greater detail in Exodus 29.38-46. Consequently it is better translated “the morning’s burnt offering” (New International Version), “the daily burnt offering,” or “the burnt offering made every morning.”

This whole verse may need to be restructured in a manner similar to the following: “In addition to the regular morning burnt offering, he also presented the grain offering, taking a handful of it and burning it on the altar.” Note that Good News Translation indicates that this statement is a kind of commentary on the main subject by enclosing it in parentheses.
