Translation commentary on Isaiah 45:17

In contrast to the idol makers, Israel will never be disgraced. Even though there is no connector at the beginning of this verse in Hebrew, Revised Standard Version adds But, which is helpful to show the contrast here.

Israel is saved by the LORD with everlasting salvation repeats the idea of “Savior” in verse 15. Yahweh rescues the Israelites, so that they are always safe. With everlasting salvation is literally “salvation of the eternities,” which means Yahweh’s rescue of Israel has a long-term benefit. This expression does not refer to “eternal life” as in the New Testament. Good News Translation says “and her victory lasts forever,” which is a valid rendering.

You shall not be put to shame or confounded to all eternity: In the previous line the prophet referred to the Israelites in the third person, but here he addresses them. Good News Translation changes this second person reference to third person for naturalness in English. Some languages may find it better to use only second person for Israel here (see the examples below). The Hebrew verbs rendered put to shame and confounded are the same ones that occur in the previous verse. This repetition highlights the contrast between the idol makers and the Israelites. Whereas the idol makers are completely disgraced, this will not happen to the Israelites because God will always ensure their well-being. To all eternity is parallel to everlasting, emphasizing God’s constant protection of his people. The Hebrew phrase rendered to all eternity refers to the longest time imaginable.

you will never know shame or humiliation.

• But you, [people of] Israel, will be rescued permanently by Yahweh;
you will never be disgraced or humiliated.
