Translation commentary on Isaiah 32:17

And the effect of righteousness will be peace: Translators may omit the conjunction And at the beginning of this verse (so New Revised Standard Version, New International Version). The effect of righteousness refers to what righteous action produces. When people are righteous, there will be peace. The Hebrew term for peace (shalom) refers to a state of communal harmony, not just the absence of strife and conflict (see the comments at 26.12).

And the result of righteousness, quietness and trust for ever: This line is parallel with the previous one. The result of righteousness is synonymous with the effect of righteousness. Both refer to the outcome of righteous actions. Here the outcome is quietness and trust. The Hebrew word for quietness is parallel with peace and speaks of tranquility (compare 30.15). The Hebrew noun translated trust refers to security here. For the phrase for ever, see the comments on verse 14.

For the translation of this verse consider the following examples:

• Righteousness will lead to peace,
and it will also lead to quietness and security for always.

• Peace will come as a result of righteousness,
and righteousness will bring lasting tranquility and security.
