But is rendered “And” by Good News Translation. The Greek sentence at the beginning of this verse begins with a weak connective that can be translated either way, depending on context, and here the context allows either—or neither, for that matter. It does seem, however, that “And” makes a better connection with verse 25.

O king: See the comments on verse 7. In English a monarch may be addressed in the third person as “Your Majesty”; this is what Good News Translation is doing in making this phrase the subject of the verb “give.”

Will give me permission may be translated “let me do it.”

The dragon: “This dragon of yours” in Good News Translation gives a nice air of contempt to what is literally just “the snake/dragon.”

Without sword or club may be rendered “without using a sword or club to strike [or, hit] it.”
