Another paragraph break is appropriate here (so Revised Standard Version, Good News Bible).

Antiochus felt that he was being treated with contempt, and he was suspicious of her reproachful tone: Antiochus could not understand what the mother was saying, since she was speaking in her own language. But he suspected, correctly, that she was not speaking favorably of him. This sentence is poorly rendered in Good News Bible. Antiochus did not think she “was making fun of him”; this was not an occasion for making fun. He thought she was defying him and encouraging her sons to defy him. She did not respect him as king, and he was aware of it. He could tell by the sound of her voice (he was suspicious of her reproachful tone). A better model here is “Antiochus could tell by the sound of her voice that she was speaking of him defiantly [or, defying him].”

The youngest brother being still alive, Antiochus not only appealed to him in words, but promised with oaths that he would make him rich and enviable if he would turn from the ways of his fathers, and that he would take him for his friend and entrust him with public affairs: The Greek word for enviable is better translated by New English Bible as “prosperous.” For the king’s friend as a title, see the comments on 1Macc 2.18. We suggest that this sentence be broken down into at least three sentences as follows:

• He had not yet killed the youngest brother, so he tried to convince him to abandon the religion [or, traditions] of his ancestors. He gave him his solemn promise that if the boy did this, the king would make him rich [and prosperous]. He also promised to give him a position in his government, with the title “Friend of the King.”

• The youngest brother was still alive. So Antiochus said to him, “If you abandon [or, stop following] the religion of your ancestors, I solemnly promise that I will make you rich and prosperous. I will also give you a good position in my government, with….”
