Another paragraph break is appropriate here (so Revised Standard Version, Good News Bible).

Next they brought forward the fifth and maltreated him: Next is a good introductory word, but the Greek has only “And.” Good News Bible has a good approach here, joining this sentence with the next verse. But if translators do this, they need to make this verse a circumstantial clause as in Good News Bible. Contemporary English Version does this with “As the fifth brother was being tortured….”
