As a result the king himself and those with him were astonished at the young man’s spirit, for he regarded his sufferings as nothing: The connector As a result is not needed. The result is quite clear from the following text speaking of the amazement of the king and his men. Good News Bible renders the king himself simply as “The king,” but the emphasis here should be kept. Those with him may be rendered “his soldiers [or, men].” For the young man’s, Good News Bible has simply the pronoun “his,” but the phrase is better here for clarity. Spirit means “attitude” or “bravery” in this context. For he regarded his sufferings as nothing may be rendered “his suffering [or, pain] seemed to mean nothing to him.”

An alternative model for this verse is:

• The king himself and his men were astonished at this young man’s [brave] attitude [or, spirit]; pain [or, suffering] seemed to mean nothing to him.
