So the king went hastily to settle the trouble may be expressed as “and the king hurried off to Cilicia to put down the revolt [or, to restore order].”

Leaving Andronicus, a man of high rank, to act as his deputy: Since the king appointed Andronicus as his deputy before leaving, Good News Bible mentions it first. This may be helpful for some translators, but it may not be necessary for others to do it. A man of high rank is a rather vague expression to describe an important man in the government. New Jerusalem Bible has “one of his dignitaries,” and New American Bible reads “one of his nobles.” For deputy see verse 29.

A model that links this verse closely with the previous one is:

• 30 … The people of these two cities then rebelled, 31 and the king went there quickly to put down the revolt [or, rebellion]. He left Andronicus, an important official, in charge [or, to act for him while he was away].
