Translation commentary on 2 Maccabees 15:13

Then likewise a man appeared means another person appeared with Onias in Judas’ dream. Good News Bible begins this verse with “Judas then saw…,” which breaks the narrative awkwardly. It would be better to say “Judas told them that he also saw….”

Distinguished by his gray hair and dignity, and of marvelous majesty and authority: The other person Judas saw was a dignified and very important looking man with gray hair.

Alternative models for this verse are:

• I also saw an impressive gray-haired [or, white-haired] man who showed great dignity and authority.

• Then another man appeared with Onias. He was an impressive man with gray hair, a majestic figure, clearly a man of authority.

• Then another man appeared with Onias. This man had gray hair, and gave a powerful impression of great authority.
