Translation commentary on 2 Maccabees 14:31

Both Revised Standard Version and Good News Bible have a paragraph break here, which is helpful.

When the latter became aware that he had been cleverly outwitted by the man: The latter is Nicanor, who realized that Judas knew something was wrong, and had escaped before Nicanor could take action. Nicanor wanted to trap Judas, but Judas cleverly tricked Nicanor.

He went to the great and holy temple while the priests were offering the customary sacrifices, and commanded them to hand the man over: As the Revised Standard Version footnote indicates, the great and holy temple is literally “the greatest and holy Temple,” which sounds good in Greek, but not in English. Goldstein solves the problem another way by saying “the greatest and holiest of temples.” Translators who have a problem here may certainly say “the great and holy Temple” (Good News Bible). Holy may be rendered “taboo.” While the priests were offering the customary sacrifices means that Nicanor showed up at the Temple while the priests were doing the most sacred of duties, and interrupted an act of worship to make his demands.

Here are alternative models for this verse:

• When Nicanor realized that Judas had outsmarted [or, tricked] him, he went to the great and holy [or, taboo] Temple when the priests were offering sacrifices. He demanded that the priests turn Judas over to him.

• … and interrupted the priests during a sacrifice. He demanded that they turn Judas over to him [or, He yelled, “Turn Judas over to me immediately!”].
