Translation commentary on 2 Maccabees 13:24

He received Maccabeus may be rendered “He even met with [Judas] Maccabeus.” We prefer this rendering to the one in Good News Bible.

Left Hegemonides as governor from Ptolemais to Gerar: The Latin text says “he made [Judas] ruler and governor from Ptolemais to the Gerrenes.” New American Bible follows this text by saying “left him [Judas] as military and civil governor of the territory from Ptolemais to the region of the Gerrenes.” This reading slightly emends the Greek text so that the name Hegemonides becomes the Greek word for “governor.” This emendation is very tempting, but there is evidence from another source that a man by this name may have served as governor (Kampen). For the city of Ptolemais, see the comments on 1Macc 5.15. The Greek text does not actually say Gerar, but “the Gerrenes.” Gerar is one idea among several of what could be meant by “the Gerrenes,” and it is as good as any, so we recommend it. Gerar was a city on the coastal plain of Palestine south of Gaza. Good News Bible provides a helpful model for this whole clause.
