Verses 23-24 use the standard formula of 1–2 Kings to summarize the reign of a ruler. This verse contains a rhetorical question and may be restated in the form of a statement (so Good News Translation, Revised English Bible, New American Bible). The parallel account of the life of Jehoram in 2 Chr 21 adds a detail that is not present here, namely that he died of some kind of terrible illness (2 Chr 21.18-19).
