Translation commentary on 2 Kings 6:12

One of his servants; that is, one of the military officers present. See the comments at verse 8.

None: In some languages it will be more natural to complete the meaning with “None of us” (New International Version), “There is no one” (Revised English Bible), or “There is no traitor among us” (Bible en français courant, Parole de Vie).

My lord, O king: For this way of politely addressing the king, see the comments at 1 Kgs 1.2.

The Hebrew word rendered but is not the most common conjunction, but is one that usually signals cause or reason. So, supplying the verb “to be,” it might be translated “it is because” or possibly “this is happening because.”

In your bedchamber: The Hebrew words rendered bedchamber refer to a dark inner room for sleeping. In languages that have no special term for “bedroom,” translators may say “in the place where you sleep” or “on your bed.” This is further proof that Elisha had supernatural knowledge (see verse 32 and 2 Kgs 5.26).

In certain languages it will be more natural to reverse the order of the last two clauses in this verse and say something like “somehow he knows what you say in your own room and he tells it to the king of Israel.”
