Translation commentary on 2 Kings 21:4

He built altars in the house of the LORD: Since readers may find it normal to build altars in the Temple, it may be necessary in certain languages to make clear what is implied in the text, namely, that the altars in question were “pagan altars” (Good News Translation) or “altars for pagan gods” (Contemporary English Version).

In Jerusalem will I put my name: This was actually said by the LORD in 1 Kgs 11.36 (see also 1 Kgs 5.3; 9.3). The direct quotation may have to be made indirect in some languages. The meaning of this short statement is that God wanted people to worship him in the Temple at Jerusalem. A more complete statement of this abbreviated declaration is found in verse 7 below.

A possible model for restructuring this verse and avoiding the direct discourse is as follows:

• Although the LORD had already said that he wanted people to worship only him in his house at Jerusalem, Manasseh built altars to other gods in that same house.
