This is the order of the souls of the righteous, as henceforth is announced: Compare verse 88. There is a textual problem here (see the Revised Standard Version footnote), but New English Bible shows the way for an interpretation of the Latin text which fits well with the context: “The joys I have been declaring are the appointed destiny for the souls of the just.” Another possible model is “I have told you the joys that are waiting for the souls of the righteous [or, the people who faithfully obeyed God].”

And the aforesaid are the ways of torment which those who would not give heed shall suffer hereafter: The word aforesaid refers back to verses 79-87. It may be rendered “Earlier I explained.” The ways of torment may be translated simply “the tortures.” Those who would not give heed are “the rebellious” (Good News Bible), those who refused to obey God’s laws.

We suggest reversing the order of this verse as follows:

• Earlier I explained the tortures that people who rebel against God will suffer after they die; now I have told you about the joys that are waiting for the souls of the righteous.”
