Translation commentary on 2 Esdras 7:95

The fourth order, they understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet, and the glory which awaits them in the last days: Compare verse 85. The nouns rest and glory are both direct objects of the verb understand, which we have translated two ways in the model below (“understand” and “be aware of”). For those languages that do not have the passive voice, the agents for the verbs being gathered and guarded are probably angels, which the model below makes explicit. Profound quiet may be rendered “complete silence.” In this context glory refers to the rewards that the righteous will receive at the time of judgment. Here is a possible model for this verse:

• Fourth [or, In the fourth stage], they enjoy rest, and understand why they have it, in places of rest where angels have gathered them together and guard them and there is complete silence. They also are aware of the glory that is waiting for them in the last days.
