And thou didst separate one from the other, for the seventh part where the water had been gathered together could not hold them both: The monsters Behemoth and Leviathan had to be separated because they were too fierce to live together in the ocean. This verse does not refer to their physical size (so Good News Bible), but to their fierceness. For the seventh part where the water had been gathered together, see verse 42. Good News Bible says simply “the sea,” which is a helpful model. An alternative model for this verse is:

• You separated them from each other, because they were too fierce to be left together in the ocean.
