Translation commentary on 2 Esdras 6:44

For immediately fruit came forth in endless abundance and of varied appeal to the taste: The conjunction For may be left implied (so Good News Bible). Immediately may be rendered “suddenly” (Contemporary English Version) or “In an instant” (Good News Bible). The Latin word for fruit is a general word that can refer to grains, fruits, and vegetables, so it is better translated “fruits and vegetables” (Good News Bible, Contemporary English Version) or “fruits, vegetables, and grains.” If translators have a general word like the Latin, that may be used. However, they may also use the word “plants.” And of varied appeal to the taste may be expressed as “enough kinds to satisfy every taste” (Good News Bible) or “each of them different and tasty” (Contemporary English Version). A model for this whole clause is “Suddenly all kinds of plants appeared, producing delicious food. There were fruits, vegetables, and grains.”

And flowers of inimitable color may be rendered “There were also flowers with the most magnificent colors” or “There were also magnificently colored flowers.”

And odors of inexpressible fragrance: This phrase most likely describes the flowers, so Good News Bible does well to combine it with the previous phrase. The word fragrance refers to a sweet, pleasing smell. This phrase may be translated “with indescribably sweet fragrances” or “with sweet smells that are hard to describe.”

These were made on the third day: See Gen 1.13.

Here is an alternative model for this verse:

• Suddenly an endless variety of plants appeared, producing delicious food. These were fruits, vegetables, and grains. There were also magnificently colored flowers with indescribably sweet fragrances. All of this happened on the third day.
