And the same fate befell them may be expanded to “The same thing happened to them that happened to Adam.” The same fate was death since the world’s peoples disobeyed God just as Adam did.

As death came upon Adam, so the flood upon them: Just as Adam was punished with death, so were they in the flood.

Here is an alternative model for this verse:

• The same thing happened to them that happened to Adam. Adam died, and the flood killed them.
