Translation commentary on 2 Esdras 10:57

For you are more blessed than many, and you have been called before the Most High, as but few have been: The conjunction For may be left implied (so Good News Bible, Contemporary English Version). In languages that do not have the passive voice, it will be helpful to put the Most High at the beginning of this verse by saying “God Most High has blessed you more than most people….” You have been called can be understood as “you have been named,” which implies that Ezra has a “reputation” (Good News Bible) before God or that God “respects” (Contemporary English Version) him. An alternative model for this verse is:

• God Most High has blessed you more than most people, and there are few people for whom he has a higher regard [or, whom he respects more].
