Here in Gilgal (see verse 14) at the “holy place” (literally before the LORD), the Israelites proclaim Saul as their king (literally, they “kinged Saul”).

Saul and all the men of Israel: women should not be excluded, so it will be better to say “people” in place of men. Also, since Saul is one of the people of Israel, some languages will have to say “Saul and all the other people of Israel.”

The word there is repeated three times in this verse. The repetition seems to be intentional, but it may be unnatural to try to imitate the text on this point. However, others may seek to preserve the emphasis by adopting the following model:

• So all the people went to Gilgal. It was there that they accepted Saul as their king. It was there that they offered fellowship sacrifices. And it was there that Saul and all the rest of the people of Israel had a great celebration of joy.
