Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 9:13

The earth was shaken by the noise of the armies is of course an exaggeration, a figure of speech to emphasize the sound of the battle. Good News Bible is good here, but a slight improvement can be made by saying “When the armies met, the sound of the battle was so loud that it shook the ground.”

And the battle raged from morning till evening may be expressed as “and the fighting went on from morning until evening” or “and the Jewish and Syrian soldiers fought each other from morning until evening.”

Contemporary English Version‘s reordering of the clauses in this verse is helpful:

• The fighting lasted from daylight until dark, and the ground trembled because of the noise.
