Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 14:15

He made the sanctuary glorious: Good News Bible says “He provided the Temple with splendid furnishings,” New English Bible has “He gave new splendour to the temple” (similarly New Jerusalem Bible), and Goldstein translates “He glorified the temple.” A better model may be “He made the Temple splendid [or, glorious] again.”

And added to the vessels of the sanctuary: Simon increased the number of utensils and other items of equipment used in the Temple ceremonies. Good News Bible expresses this line well with “and added a large number of utensils for use in worship.”

It is possible to reverse the lines of this verse as follows:

• He added to the Temple’s stock of utensils [for use in worship], and made the Temple splendid again.
