Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 12:39

Then Trypho attempted to become king of Asia and put on the crown, and to raise his hand against Antiochus the king: For king of Asia, see the comments on 1Macc 8.6. Put on the crown has the same meaning as become king, so Good News Bible combines these expressions, saying “make himself king,” and so does Contemporary English Version with “be king.” To raise his hand against Antiochus the king means to challenge Antiochus with a show of force. Good News Bible says “plotted a rebellion against King Antiochus.” Another possible model is “made plans to become king of Syria instead of Antiochus.” Since Antiochus was only a boy when he became king, Trypho had the real power. At this point Trypho decided to become king himself. Good News Bible reverses the order of the clauses in this verse for a more logical order: the rebellion preceded becoming king.
