I met him in battle, and he and his army were crushed by us: He and his army were crushed by us says the same thing as “I crushed Demetrius” in the previous verse. The king uses first person singular and plural pronouns to refer to himself in this verse and the next one (I, us, we, our). Revised Standard Version follows the Greek literally, but Good News Bible uses first person singular pronouns throughout these verses for consistency. We recommend following Good News Bible.

And we have taken our seat on the throne of his kingdom repeats information from the previous verse.

Since there is repetition in verses 52 and 53, they may be combined and reordered as follows:

• I have returned to my kingdom. My army has fought Demetrius’ army and I have taken over his throne, which is the throne of my [own] ancestors. Since I am now in firm control of the government of this country….
