Moreover, the five thousand shekels of silver which my officials have received every year from the income of the services of the temple, this too is canceled, because it belongs to the priests who minister there: For shekels of silver, see the comments on verse 40. My officials is literally “they”; the subject of the verb rendered have received is unspecified in Greek. Good News Bible seems to agree with how Revised Standard Version has specified the subject, although its wording avoids much of the problem. The sense of my officials have received is obviously “money paid into the royal treasury,” so Contemporary English Version translates “you had to pay me.” It is not clear what tax is referred to here, but it may be that Demetrius is referring to a tax placed on the Temple itself by Lysias (see 2Macc 11.3). How the exemption in this verse differs from the one granted in verse 31 is hard to say. Contemporary English Version has a helpful model for this verse:

• In the past, you had to pay me five thousand pieces of silver every year as a tax on the money the Temple earned. Now this tax money will go to the priests who serve in the Temple.
