Solomon expelled Abiathar: The Hebrew verb rendered expelled expresses a stronger action than the English word “dismissed” (Good News Translation). It means “to drive out” or “to banish.” That Solomon dismissed Abiathar from serving as a priest does not agree with the statement in 1 Kgs 4.4, which says that Zadok and Abiathar were prominent priests during Solomon’s reign.

Thus fulfilling …: In certain languages a new sentence will be required from this point. The translation may read “In this way…,” referring to the fact that Abiathar was banished from the service of the priesthood. The verb “fulfill” will be rendered in certain languages as “make happen,” “cause to be,” or something similar.

Abiathar was a descendant of the priest Eli. The LORD’s message concerning the house of Eli (that is, Eli and his descendants) is found in 1 Sam 2.27-36. Other versions refer to “the household of Eli” (Moffatt), “the family of Eli” (Contemporary English Version), and “the family of the high priest Eli” (Bible en français courant, Parole de Vie).

Shiloh was a city that was about 30 kilometers (18 miles) north of Jerusalem.
