He said to his sons is literally “he said to his sons, saying.” The redundancy here in Hebrew will be unnatural in many languages.
And they saddled it is literally “and they saddled,” but in many cases a direct object will be required by the grammar of the language (so Revised Standard Version supplies it). Others may say “So they did as he ordered.”
