Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead: Rehoboam became the first king of the southern kingdom. Regarding his reign, see 1 Kgs 12.1-24 and 14.21-31. According to 1 Kgs 14.21, he became king when he was forty-one years old.
In his stead is “in his place.” The last clause of the verse may be restructured as “his son Rehoboam succeeded him as king” (New American Bible), or simply “his son Rehoboam became the next king” (New Living Translation).
