And ordered them to tell Iddo and his brethren and the treasurers at that place to send us men to serve as priests in the house of our Lord: In this context his brethren probably refers to “his relatives” (Contemporary English Version), who worked with Iddo. Good News Bible says “his associates.” Once again the author is coping with the place name Casiphia in the parallel passage of Ezra 8.17 by referring to the treasurers (see the comments on the previous verse). The treasurers may be rendered “the other treasurers,” since Iddo and his relatives were also treasurers. The pronoun us refers to Ezra and his group gathered at the Theras Canal. Men to serve as priests translates a Greek verb meaning “to be or act as a priest.”
Here is a possible model for verses 45 and 46:
• 45 I told them to go and find Iddo, who was the leader at the treasury, 46 and tell him, his relatives who worked with him, and the other treasurers there to send us some men who could serve as priests in the Temple of our Lord.
