Translation commentary on 1 Esdras 4:52

And an additional ten talents a year for burnt offerings to be offered on the altar every day, in accordance with the commandment to make seventeen offerings: Ten talents is approximately 340 kilograms or 750 pounds of silver. Burnt offerings were offerings in which the whole animal was burned as a sacrifice, except for the skin (see Lev 1.3-17). For the altar, which was in front of the Temple, see the comments on 1 Esd 1.17-18. The reference to seventeen offerings cannot be explained; there is no such requirement in the Bible. Some Greek manuscripts omit the number (so New English Bible), but since it is much more likely that scribes would have omitted it rather than added it, the number is probably original to the text and should be translated. Here is a model based on Contemporary English Version for this verse:

• Each year they must also give the Jews another 750 pounds [or, 340 kilograms] of silver to buy animals for the seventeen sacrifices that must be burned whole on the altar every day.
