In Gbaya, the notion of a sudden dying out of the fire is emphasized in Psalm 118:12 with lip, an ideophone that refers to the sudden interruption of a flame or light.
Note that the reading of “blazed” in the New Revised Standard Version, updated edition that is used as a reference translation here is also a possible reading but the Gbaya translation followed many other English and French translation with “extinguish” or “die out.”
Ideophones are a class of sound symbolic words expressing human sensation that are used as literary devices in many African languages. (Source: Philip Noss)
