SIL Translator’s Notes on Romans 9:26

9:26a–c

This is a quote of the latter part of Hosea 1:10. If you indicate the location of quotes from the Old Testament with cross-references, you may want to do so here.

In some languages a new quote is introduced again as Scripture. For example:

And ⌊the Holy Book also says,⌋ “It will happen…

9:26a

in the very place: This refers to an exact location. In the context of Hosea, it might be Jerusalem, or the region of Judah, or the land of the ten northern tribes of Israel, or it might be the lands where the Assyrians took them. It is not important here which place this is. Use a word that can refer to a city or a piece of land or a region. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

in the same location
-or-
in the land

it was said to them: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

God⌋ said

9:26b–c

they will be called: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. It is not clear whether this refers to God calling them or people in general calling them “the sons of the living God.” For example:

people/God⌋ will call them

sons: Here this word refers to children, both sons and daughters. For example:

children (New Jerusalem Bible)

the living God: The word living here refers to God being alive, as opposed to idols, which are not alive. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

the alive God
-or-
the God who lives ⌊forever
