So it is written: This phrase introduces a quote from the Old Testament. Paul quoted what God said to the nation of Israel (Malachi 1:2–3). See how you translated this phrase in 1:17 or 4:17.

Jacob I loved: The name Jacob is put before I loved in an English poetic grammar. In some languages it must be put in its normal position. In English this would be after the word loved.

Esau I hated: The name Esau is put before I hated in an English poetic grammar, as above with “Jacob I loved.”
