The Greek begins with a word that is often translated “and” or “but.” Here it indicates that the topic from 8:7 continues and there is new information about pleasing God. For example, the New Jerusalem Bible begins this verse with:

and (New Jerusalem Bible)

Those controlled by the flesh: The phrase by the flesh indicates that these people’s whole life is oriented toward the needs and wants that govern their physical lives. They think and behave only according to it, and think it normal to think and behave that way. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

Those who obey their human nature (Good News Translation)
-or-
those who live according to the needs and desires of the body
-or-
whoever has the desires of the body rule their lives
