Paragraph 9:21–22
9:21
In this verse Jesus commanded the disciples not to tell others what they had just said to him. Even though it was true, they should keep quiet about it. Connect this verse to 9:20 in a way that is natural in your language.
Jesus strictly warned them: The Greek phrase that the Berean Standard Bible translates as strictly warned contains two verbs that mean almost the same thing. For example:
he charged and commanded them (Revised Standard Version)
The two verbs together emphasize that Jesus was giving the disciples a strong command. Another way to translate this phrase is:
Jesus gave them strict orders (Good News Translation)
not to tell this to anyone: Jesus told the disciples not to tell anyone what Peter had said about him. It was true, but it was not the right time yet for all the people to hear that he was the Messiah.
In some languages it may be more natural to translate this verse using direct speech. For example:
Jesus strictly warned them, “Do not tell this to anyone.”
