SIL Translator’s Notes on Luke 20:45

Section 20:45–47

Jesus warned his disciples about the scribes

In this section Jesus warned his disciples about the scribes. He told them that the scribes were proud. They wanted people to notice them and to admire and praise them. They were also greedy and took the possessions of poor widows. Jesus warned his disciples not to follow the bad example of these scribes or act the way they acted.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other examples of headings for this section are:

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 23:1–8 and Mark 12:38–40.

Paragraph 20:45–47

20:45

In the hearing of all the people, Jesus said to His disciples: This verse introduces what Jesus said to his disciples about the scribes. The phrase that the Berean Standard Bible translates as In the hearing of all the people indicates that many other people were there and heard what Jesus said to his disciples. Some other ways to translate this verse are:

As all the people listened to him, Jesus said to his disciples (Good News Translation)
-or-
In the hearing of all the people he said to the disciples (New Revised Standard Version)
-or-
Then, with the crowds listening, he turned to his disciples and said (New Living Translation (2004))

His disciples: Here the phrase His disciples refers to the larger group that followed Jesus, not only to the twelve disciples. For help in translating “disciple,” see the note at 17:1a and disciple in the Glossary.
