SIL Translator’s Notes on Lamentations 4:7

4:7a Her dignitaries were brighter than snow

Our princes were lean and tanned, (TLB)

Our princes once glowed with health. (New Living Translation (2004))

4:7b whiter than milk

They ⌊wore nice⌋ white ⌊clothes⌋ .
-or-
They looked beautiful ⌊and had promising futures⌋ .

4:7c their bodies were more ruddy than rubies

Their bodies were robust and ruddy (MSG)
-or-
They were healthy and good looking.

4:7d their appearance like sapphires.

They looked glorious and splendid.
-or-
They were as pleasing to look at ⌊as if one looked at⌋ a precious blue stone.

4:7a-d (combined)

In the past, the leaders of Jerusalem were strong and healthy. Their bodies seemed to shine like valuable stones.

Our leaders had a good life. They were healthy, good looking ⌊and had a promising future before them⌋ .
