SIL Translator’s Notes on John 21:21

21:21

When Peter saw him: This clause means “when Peter saw this disciple.” Peter saw the disciple whom Jesus loved, probably John the author of this Gospel.

he asked: This clause here introduces a question that Peter asked Jesus. In some languages you may want to indicate that Peter asked a question, like the Berean Standard Bible. For example:

he asked Jesus (Good News Translation)

Lord: The Greek word that the Berean Standard Bible translates as Lord is the same title of respect as in 21:17 and 20. See how you translated the word in those verses.

what about him?: This question is short for “What will happen to this disciple?” Peter was asking Jesus how John would die. Here are other ways to translate this question:

what about this man? (Good News Translation)
-or-
what will happen to him?
-or-
what will be his fate?
