SIL Translator’s Notes on Ecclesiastes 8:11

8:11a When the sentence for a crime is not speedily executed,

Sometimes people are not immediately punished for the bad things they do. (English Easy-to-Read Version)
-or-
If ⌊the ruler⌋ does not quickly punish ⌊people for⌋ doing evil,

8:11b the hearts of men become fully set on doing evil.

So people make plans to commit even more crimes. (New International Reader’s Version)

more people decide that they want to do evil too.

8:11a-b (reordered)

People who are guilty should receive their punishment quickly. If that does not happen, other people also want to do evil things. (EEB)

Why do people commit crimes so readily? Because crime is not punished quickly enough. (Good News Translation)
